After a round of close calls and near misses, I happened to be one of the lucky few who saw Mobile Suit Gundam 00 The Movie – A Awakening of the Trailblazer – this past Sunday, at the New York Comic Con/New York Anime Festival 2010.
The whole experience was a complete fucking blast. Aside this being my first experience at a Comic Con, I am now part of the audience who got to see the movie on this side of the world. This feat of itself alone is a major Crowning Moment of Awesome.
To top it off, this was the first time I’ve been exposed to a large amount of Gundam fandom – in the real world, outside of message boards and comment boxes. Instead of the usual hatedom and bickering that tends to live on message boards and comment boxes, there was random shouting of memes, chants and cheers. Some awesome person even made a mask of the head of the 00 QAN[T] and strutted around on the stage, to a round of cheers.
The movie itself is a good film. It’s not a perfect masterpiece, but it does all of the right things that a Grand Finale should do and goes out with one hell of a stinger at the very end. (More about the movie later).
Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I am grateful to be given the opportunity to see the movie.
