I posted a little over a month ago about Discotek Media acquiring the license and distribution rights of Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO). Over today, their Facebook account has been abuzz with all sorts of new acquisitions.

Great Teacher Onizuka to be Re-released by Discotek Media

Great Teacher Onizuka, aka “GTO” by Tohru Fujisawa, is the story of Eikichi Onizuka, a 22 year old, once legendary motorcycle delinquent (and perpetual virgin), now seeking a new direction in life, decides to taking up teaching, mainly for the easy hours and the opportunity for after school sessions with beautiful high schools girls. However, he undergoes an epiphany, and realizes that 1, he actually likes teaching, and 2, he possess a sense of morality: the high school girls are off limits, but their single mothers will do just fine.

With these new realizations, Onizuka makes it his goal to become the greatest teacher ever, using his philosophy made up of life lessons and some seriously insane feats of over-the-top badassery. It’s a good thing for him, as the only job he can land is the troubled class 3-4 at Holy Forest Academy, who has made it their vendetta to drive away any teacher, by all means necessary. Moreover, Onizuka has to deal with the Super-Conservative Vice Principal Uchiyamada, who only looks at him as a menace and a parasite… and the frequent destroyer of his beloved Toyota Cresta.

The fun in the series is the sheer over-the-top hilarity that Onizuka consistently gets himself into as he changes the lives of each student one-by-one, helping them to overcome their issues and showing them to genuinely enjoy life.

GTO is the sequel series to Shonan Jun’ai Gumi, (lit. “Shōnan True Love Group”) and Bad Company, both of which focus on the life of Onizuka before GTO.

GTO’s anime adaptation was produced in 1999 by Studio Perriot.

The Complete Series will be reissued in 2013 by Discotek Media.
Exact date and price TBA.
